1985/Drama Comedy starring Rosanna Arquette, Madonna and Aidan Quinn
Directed by Susan Seidelman, and produced by Sarah Pillsbury and Midge Sanford.
The other night the MGM channel featured this movie. It does seems very dated of course, yet it is nostalgic with fashion, hairdos and NYC scenes, so 1980s,….and particularly obvious how different Madonna is now. Yet it still retains charm and great background Madonna music of her early work.
Story line: New jersey housewife Roberta Glass (Rosanna Arquette) tries to spice up her boring life by reading the personal ads, especially an ad placed by a mysterious resident of NYC (Madonna is Susan). Who is seeking Susan and why? So inadvertently Roberta becomes involved and even becomes Susan at one point. Some of the ensuing complications are funny. This is a screwball comedy and there are underground NY characters. It is a dizzying plot, but so much fun! I won’t even try to explain how for instance Roberta is sawed in half by a broken-down nightclub magician!
I like this movie because it is goofy and cheerful, it does not take itself too seriously……..with introductions to unforgettable characters, played by good actors,…………watch it, this is good light summer viewing.
