My All-Time Favorite Christmas Movie, December 2015

THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER

Release date: January 12, 1940
Director: Ernst Lubitsch

The Shop Around the Corner is an American romantic comedy starring James Stewart (Alfred Kralik) and Margaret Sullavan (Klara Novak) as employees of Matuschek and Company, a small Budapest department store, butting heads and disagreeing on almost everything. Both are enamored of their respective pen pals. The inimitable Frank Morgan as Mr. Matuschek, the owner of the store, adds charm as only he could in this movie.

(This film was the inspiration for the future “You’ve Got Mail”)

Every Christmas TCM plays this movie and I always look forward to it with enormous pleasure. It is a lovely sweet reminder of how funny and unpredictable relationships can be. And because the Christmas holiday plays so prominently in the film, it is a perfect choice for feel-good festive fare.
